Where gastronomy and tradition meet

About

Hoffy’s Kosher restaurant, named after its owners, the three Hoffman brothers, is a place where gourmet meets tradition in an unforgettable dining experience that will excite your taste buds as well as your mind! Located in Antwerp, near the Central station, Antwerp Zoo and the Diamond Burse, Hoffy’s is a perfect spot for both wandering tourists in search of adventure and families alike.

Our
Family Story

Our story, like many others, is full of suffering, fear, joy and perseverance. Our parents, Mr and Mrs Hoffman, were Jewish immigrants when World War II began. Our mother managed to hide from the Nazis, working in a Budapest bakery, but our father was taken into the notorious Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. Our parents came to Antwerp in 1945, eager to build a new, better life. Without any business plan or calculation, they decided to open a fish shop. Their gut feeling was right, and that very same fish shop is open to this day, just across the road from our restaurant. We opened a restaurant in 1985, in the commercial diamond district in the KRING building in Antwerp. Despite the great success during its first year, we weren’t satisfied – the restaurant, which had a big hall that seated 120 people, felt too business-oriented. In 1986 we rented a smaller space, opened Hoffy’s restaurant and catering and made it into a cosy place with delicious kosher food, where people can find out more about the Chassidishe Yiddishe culture.

Our Family Story

Like so many others, our story is one of suffering, fear, joy and remarkable resilience. Our parents, Mr and Mrs Hoffman, were Jewish immigrants who arrived in Antwerp after the Second World War. Mrs Hoffman had survived the Nazi occupation by hiding and working in a bakery in Budapest, while our father endured the horrors of the notorious Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp.

In 1945 they came to Antwerp with nothing but hope for a better future. Guided purely by intuition, they opened a small fish shop. Their instinct proved right — that same fish shop is still open today, right across the street from our restaurant.

Our Passion

What truly gives a meal its soul is not only the quality of the ingredients, but the history and tradition behind every dish. Would a glass of Château Margaux 2005 taste the same without knowing the centuries-old story of the vineyard? The real magic begins when you understand the love and heritage that lie behind it.

At Hoffy’s, our passion is to create a bridge between cultures. That’s why every guest receives a personal explanation of the dishes, the traditions and Jewish life. Our cuisine reflects a thousand years of Jewish history — a beautiful blend of influences from all the places our people have lived. Every plate tells a story, and we love sharing those stories with you.

Our Special Wish

Since opening Hoffy’s, we have been fortunate to achieve many wonderful things: we appeared in the documentary “Jews of Antwerp” (1996) alongside renowned Belgian chef Jeroen Meus, and we even had the honour of cooking for the King of Belgium.

Yet one wish remains: to welcome you and offer you an unforgettable gastro-cultural experience.
