About

Where Gourmet Meets Tradition

Hoffy’s Kosher restaurant, named after its owners, the three Hoffman brothers, is a place where gourmet meets tradition in an unforgettable dining experience that will excite your taste buds as well as your mind! Located in Antwerp, near the Central station, Antwerp Zoo and the Diamond Burse, Hoffy’s is a perfect spot for both wandering tourists in search of adventure and families alike.

Our

Family Story

Our story, like many others, is full of suffering, fear, joy and perseverance. Our parents, Mr and Mrs Hoffman, were Jewish immigrants when World War II began. Our mother managed to hide from the Nazis, working in a Budapest bakery, but our father was taken into the notorious Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. Our parents came to Antwerp in 1945, eager to build a new, better life. Without any business plan or calculation, they decided to open a fish shop. Their gut feeling was right, and that very same fish shop is open to this day, just across the road from our restaurant.

We opened a restaurant in 1985, in the commercial diamond district in the KRING building in Antwerp. Despite the great success during its first year, we weren’t satisfied – the restaurant, which had a big hall that seated 120 people, felt too business-oriented. In 1986 we rented a smaller space, opened Hoffy’s restaurant and catering and made it into a cosy place with delicious kosher food, where people can find out more about the Chassidishe Yiddishe culture.

Our

Passion

What gives soul and substance to the food you’re eating isn’t just its quality, but the history and tradition it came from. Would we fully appreciate a glass of 2005 Château Margaux, without knowing the vineyard’s famous history that dates back to the 16th century? We would surely enjoy it immensely, but the magic happens when you get to know the passion that stands behind it.

Our passion lies in creating unity between all cultures – that’s why each of our guests will be offered a full explanation of all the food, tradition and Jewish life.

During our millennia-long history, we have been scattered all over the world and as a result, our food is a fusion of different places and events, that tells an enchanting story of the Jewish history and tradition, for those who know to listen. Our

Special Wish

Dusuring our restaurant’s long history, we have achieved a lot of things: we’ve been featured in a documentary called „Joden Van Antwerpen in 1996“, a 2017 TV show called „Goed Volk“ with the famous Belgian chef Jeroen Meus – we’ve even cooked for the King of Belgium! But one wish remains, and that is to get the chance to meet YOU and offer you a gastro-cultural experience you will remember.

What Our Guest Say

Rodrigo

“If you want to try real Yiddish food, go to Hoffy’s. Be aware, as one of the owners told me, that it is not “Mediterranean food” -he meant Israeli or generic Hebrew food-, but Yiddish food, classical central European food. The Kosher version of what Germans or Polish were eating in the 19th century. They do have a delicious non Yiddish main course: the Sefardi style chicken -marinated with prunes and red wine-. The owners and the waiter are very nice and funny. They will recommend you good tasting options if, like me, you do not know much about their food. I found the gefilte fish and the taster platter particularly delicious. And don’t forget to try their red and white horseradish!!! I think they call it “chrain or khreyn”.“

“If you want to encounter real Jewish homemade kitchen, this is the place to visit in Antwerp. We visited for a dinner with friends, and opted for the ‘Introduction menu’, not a single thing to regret at the table! Price/quality is also an excellent ratio. To recommend, we’ll definitely be back!“
